Horse Meat Sashimi

I Ate a Horse With No Name…

Every place in Japan has a local delicacy. Nagai’s is: Horse Meat Sashimi! Yes, you heard that right. Raw cuts of horse meat. Sound disgusting? Actually, its really not. Give it a try!

I'll admit, the first time I tried horse meat I was skeptical. Not only had I never eaten horse-meat before, but I'd never eaten raw meat! For all that, the experience really wasn't too bad. I found I actually liked the taste, which wasn't too strong. In general, you can find horse meat sashimi at most of the Izakaya pubs around town, so head to one of those to have this unique experience. The Izakaya I tried horse meat at personally is called Iza, and can be found here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/QmHyMXD1wsTv7aou9

If you want to try something different, you can also try horse-meat ramen. There are a number of horse-meat ramen restaurants around the town where you can have horse meat in place of the more traditional pork. This is a great option for people with Kosher or Halal aversions to pork (which is almost always the meat of choice for ramen, otherwise). For horse-meat ramen, I suggest the following restaurant (the name in Japanese is 馬肉支那そば まる久): https://maps.app.goo.gl/XrmUMcfxTbAQzjg8A

Kendama and Spike

Test your skills at Spike.

Kendama is a local speciality of Nagai. It is a game where you have a wooden handle and a ball attached to it by a string. The goal is to catch the ball on the handle. Simple in theory, it can be a lot more challenging in practice!

Located across from the city hall, Spike is a store where you can come test your Kendama skills and even raise your official ranking as a Kendama-expert.
